Analysis: WOC Sprint 2014 Men

The sprint in Venice was a mix of routechoice legs and navigationally technical legs. Quite a few legs were without routechoice options - and usually most of the runners chose the correct route. However, several of the favourites did some big routechoice mistakes losing them the place on the podium.

Below detailed splits tables and route choice options are included for each leg. For the legs of special interest (legs which were desicive with respect to route choices taken by the runners), the variant each runner took in included in the table below the map.

Note! An analysis for the women's race is also coming up - but a bit less elaborate.

Summary

Soren Bobach won the race based on always chosing the right route choice, except for control 11 where a wrong route choice nearly cost him the victory. Daniel Hubmann had a very similar race. His speed was a bit higher than Bobach's, and he also chose the correct route on all legs except one; leg 19 - this leg costing the Swiss runner 14 seconds. Tue Lassen's race was characterized by taking the right routes all the way - his speed being a bit lower than Bobach - and thus even without any route choice errors, he "only" got the bronze medal.

Matthias Kyburz's race was the opposite of the medalists. Very high speed - taking the wrong route choice several times. Kyburz lost around 25 seconds on taking wrong route choices - effectively taking away his chances for the win.

Jerker Lysell and Jonas Lenadersson on the other hand had a more uneven races, losing time in places where it is not easy to explain why based on the route choice challenges - especially in the second part of the course.

Analysis - leg by leg

The following were the most decisive legs - with respect to the medals. The text here is repeated below for each leg with map/routes and split times, but it is easier read in this summary to get a good overview.
  • Leg 1: Note that the biggest favourite Jonas Leandersson loses 5 seconds (he was 20.9 seconds behind Bobach in the end) already to the first control - on an easy technical leg without real route choice options.
  • Leg 2: Leg two has no route choice options - you just need to navigate safely in the park.
  • Leg 3: This is one of the legs which looks most complex on first sight, but when analyzing it closer, most of the alternatives are nearly equal time-wise. The only thing you can do where you really lose time is to go left (either the variant marked E or a combination of E and B. Both lose you around 8-10 seconds - having to run 50 meters longer. One top favourite loses time here: Matthias Kyburz loses 9 seconds by running E (he was 15.3 seconds behind BObach in the end). There is also room for losing time getting out of the control; here there are four alternatives - going through the green like Tue Lassen did is more risky than going to the right out of the control..
  • Leg 3 to 6: Mostly about running and navigating safely. No special route choice challenges.
  • Leg 7: Again a short leg without special route choice challenges, but it was possible to lose a lot of time here as many of the women showed - losing 20-30 seconds and more. For the men it was Yannick Michels suffering - being in second place at control 6(!). But on control number 7 Michiels did a mistake costing 19(!) seconds, effectively taking him out of the fight for medals. Michiels was 27.5 seconds behind Bobach in the final results.
  • Leg 8: Short leg with three route choices, but no real time differences.
  • Leg 9: The spectator leg is easy without any technical challenges except for a map exchange. Note how Daniel Hubmann loses 6 seconds here (Hubmann was only 2.2 seconds behind Bobach in the end)! Is this because Hubmann reads routes for the rest of the course? If it is, he still failed, though...
  • Leg 10: Another leg with only one real variant - but yet Matthias Kyburz choses the other one. Except for Kyburz who choses the wrong variant and loses 14 seconds (note how Kyburz is only 15.3 seconds behind Bobach in the end), all top runners pick the right variant here.
  • Leg 11: This is were Søren Bobach could have lost his gold medal - Bobach having his biggest time loss of 11 seconds chosing the C-variant (which is really a hybrid of the two "real" variants A and B. Bobach said himself that this was his only mistake - the rest of the race was perfect. Two other runners lose significant time on this leg by running variant B: Kvaal Osterbo and Martin Hubmann (both are more than 30 seconds behind in the end, but the 15/13 seconds lost would have put them close to the Top 6).
  • Leg 12-14: A few legs with 2 route choices on each - not very decisive. Some navigational challenges though. Note how Leandersson loses 4 seconds to 12 and Lysell loses 5 seconds to 14 / Leandersson 3 seconds (Lysell was only 11 seconds behind Bobach in the end - Leandersson 20.9 seconds).
  • Leg 15: One of the few legs where Tue Lassen loses time; 5 seconds (in the end he was only 4.2 seconds behind Bobach) lost on this leg which does not really have any route choice options and is also quite easy techically.
  • Leg 16: The Swedes Jerker Lysell (7 seconds) and Jonas Leandersson (9 seconds) lose time (Lysell was only 11 seconds behind Bobach in the end - Leandersson 20.9 seconds) on this leg without any real route choice options. Not clear why they lose so much.
  • Leg 17: This is again a leg which looks complex on the map, but with only two real alternatives A and B - and these were quite equal in time. It seems like B was maybe 3-4 seconds faster based on the splits times. Jerker Lysell (6 seconds, B), Matthias Kyburz (6 seconds, A) and Jonas Leanderson (9 seconds A) lose time here.
  • Leg 19: This is finally the leg which decided the race. Nearly all run B - the best variant. Daniel Hubmann and a few others run A - and lose 10-15 seconds (Note how Hubmann is only 2.2 seconds behind Bobach in the end) This decided the medals - and will be remembered for some time ...

      MEN: S-1
Note that the biggest favourite Jonas Leandersson loses 5 seconds (he was 20.9 seconds behind Bobach in the end) already to the first control - on an easy technical leg without real route choice options. It looks like all runners - including Leandersson - run A.

      MEN: 6-7
Again a short leg without special route choice challenges, but it was possible to lose a lot of time here when you chose variant B as many of the women showed - losing 20-30 seconds and more. For the men it was Yannick Michels suffering (also chosing B) - being in second place at control 6(!). But on control number 7 Michiels did a mistake costing 19(!) seconds, effectively taking him out of the fight for medals. Michiels was 27.5 seconds behind Bobach in the final results.

The reason probably is that it is difficult to see the narrow passages. Note also that all these passages are closed, although it was a lot better visible on the map the competitors had than this jpg version.

      MEN: 10-11
This is a leg with two real variants - A (right) and B (left). In addition there is the hybrid variant C. B (and C) are significantly longer, losing you 10-15 seconds.

This is were Soren Bobach could have lost his gold medal - Bobach having his biggest time loss of 11 seconds chosing the C-variant.

      MEN: 14-15
Two variants which are time-wise and length-wise very easy - this is not a route choice leg. Still one of the few legs where Tue Lassen loses time; 5 seconds (in the end he was only 4.2 seconds behind Bobach) lost on this leg which does not really have any route choice options and is also quite easy techically.

      MEN: 15-16
Another leg without route choice challenges - and not the most technical either. The Swedes Jerker Lysell (7 seconds) and Jonas Leandersson (9 seconds) lose time (Lysell was only 11 seconds behind Bobach in the end - Leandersson 20.9 seconds) on this leg without any real route choice options. Not clear why they lose so much time.

      MEN: 16-17
This is again a leg which looks complex on the map, but with only two real alternatives A and B - and these were quite equal in time, B was maybe 3-4 seconds faster based on the splits times. Jerker Lysell (6 seconds, B), Matthias Kyburz (6 seconds, A - wrong route choice) and Jonas Leanderson (9 seconds A, wrong route choice) lose time here.

This is finally the leg which decided the race. Nearly all run B - the best variant. Daniel Hubmann and a few others run A - and lose 10-15 seconds (Note how Hubmann is only 2.2 seconds behind Bobach in the end) This decided the medals - and will be remembered for some time ...
